My review

I am slowly finding myself drowning in the sci-fi stories world! I started to realize this with this book. This book is a great read if you want to have some reality in the middle of sci-fi!

The first moments of the story put me right into the time and place with the characters. I began to imagine their looks, their ships, their buildings, and how the Earth looked like in that age. I enjoyed how each character has his own history and story. And I enjoyed the main character’s disagreements with his family, that added some excitement to each encounter with his parents.

The way the author describes the objects, being another person, or a building, or a ship, or a vehicle was really imaginative. It allows you to easily imagine them in front of you. The overall atmosphere of the age where the story takes place is feeling a little different from the usual advanced civilization sci-fi stories. There was this dystopian feeling on everything, comms are monitored and controlled, information are not exactly private, everything is connected to the network, which adds a feeling of being watched and monitored all the time!

When the talk moved to space, there was nothing about instant travel from point to point. The travel times were realistic. And the fact that we are mining asteroids is not completely strange from this time. We already have plans to work with asteroids in the future, and in the time of the story we see those plans got realized. The base on which the author build the faster than light travel is not so strange as well. He uses current physicists theories to carve the way for it, even if it still a mysterious science, it is a sci-fi at the end…

The most aspect that I liked about the story is the realism in the ships design and mechanics. When the author start describing a ship in the process of preparing to fire a gun, he makes sure you feel how a the crew feel and sense it. It is not an automatic stream of plasma or fire, but rather a slow and strong process that the guns need to take a little rest after each round of fire. But at the same time you can overload the guns and fire shot after shot and feel the guns fatigued and overheated, which is a signal that the ship is getting to its maximum power.

Ships engines and acceleration is not missed as well. The ship takes its time to accelerate and to stop. And when it does stop it does with retro-thrusters, not out of nothing like it is flooding in water or in the air! Engines have their maximum power, and are maintained by a lot of crew, which is another great point for the realism!.

The most exciting part of all is the space fights… It puts you in a great atmosphere where you are able to participate in the fight with your senses… It makes some moments of tense and fear of the outcome… When the time is over, it is time to assess the damage and repairs… The ships need a docking space and special care to be battle fit again. This is a great aspect and real life limitation. Because without this limitation, it could be a magical ship that repairs itself and can overpower anything else in the universe!

The parts with sex and love making was not exactly among the parts I liked. But at the end the characters are humans with their needs!

Some parts of this story became more familiar to me when I was reading… They seem to have something common in some current space related games such as EVE Online… The type of weapons and size of ships were all very common with the game, and with reality as well!

My recommendation

If you are a sci-fi lover, and like a bit of realism in the story, this book is great! I would definitely tell you to read this book. This is the first one of 3 books, once you finish it you will look for the second one immediately.

This book successfully from my point of view combined many genres into one… You can find mystery, thriller and action, adventure, and even some romance… So this is really worth to checkout!
